3000 years ago the Astaani Empire colonized Pristine and Maania. The Astaani civilization was at its height and for almost a thousand years they terraformed, customized, and manipulated the planets within the Pristine and Maania systems to their. In their arrogance, any negative consequences or repercussions of creativity were ignored. In both Maania and Pristine, whole planets were moved such that their orbits were more pleasing and fell within the biospheres of the respective suns. Abbadus in Pristine was turned into a perfect garden world, rife with genetically engineered life forms and introduced species. Tectonic engineers on Asura were never quite satisfied with the arrangement of the planet’s continents and continually shuffled them around.
The peoples of the Astaani Empire did not escape the manipulation of her scientists. Stylistic revisions were readily applied to genomes with little thought of long term consequence. It is little wonder that their quest for perfection (or sometimes just novelty) they went too far. Any warning signs were ignored and bioengineered plagues swept the Empire devastating populations. So virulent and numerous were the plagues that whole systems were depopulated.
In AET6583 (2045 standard years ago), seeking to save themselves, the scientists of Maania launched a vast gravity “bomb” into the slip knot connecting the Maania and Pristine systems to the rest of the Astaani Empire. The results could not have been predicted – not only did it sever Maania from the Astaani Cluster but it also caused the slip-knots connecting to Maania and Pristine to de-stabilize and disconnect. The de-stabilized slip-knots put forth strange energies that were visible amid the stars of Pristine and Maania. For a thousand years Pristine and Maania developed in isolation. Many of the systems and technologies left by the Astaani degraded and in fell into wreck and ruin. Those that survived became more mystic lore than science: gravity technology on Maania; genetic/biological technology on Pristine.
